Belly button birthdays...

It’s my belly button birthday today, one of my favourite phrases to come out of AA. Allowing the simple distinction between that day on which we were born and the day which celebrates our sobriety. We become like the queen, it is two birthdays. And with my sobriety date coming not too far behind, it’s quite a season.

Birthdays used to be painful for me. They always sat heavily. Heavy with un-met expectation and heavy with discomfort. When you don’t want to be who you are, celebrating the beginning of it doesn’t always sit well. Over time this has changed completely. What’s particularly great, is that with acceptance and love for myself there is no longer any expectation either. It’s a day of contentment and peace.
